I was thinking about my very first paint project and how scared I was when I was painting it. I didn't know the first thing about shabby or chic and had no clue how to distress a piece of furniture. I thought distressing was standing there and yelling loudly at the furniture and making snide comments to it. I called my brother and asked him for help because at this point yelling wasn't working and neither me or my fiance knew what to do. He explained how to paint the hutch step by step and after many days of sanding........ drips....... cursing....... sanding some more........... painting............ more cursing...........here is what she ended up looking like.
I fell in love with her and kind of regret selling her since she was my first. What was your first project? I would love for you guys to send me some photos and tell me your story.

What a goooooorgeeeeeeous hutch!!! I can't believe you sold it either!
I've done lots of little craft projects all my life - but my first actual big furniture piece was my upholstered headboard with a nailhead trim (I talk about it on my new blog!) It was a major undertaking - like you I was clueless how to really get started and accomplish it. I gathered all my info on how to do it from different blogs, and finally my hubby and I just went for it. Again, similar to your story, there were days of cursing; but also stapling, pulling of fabric (and hair sometimes too!), and nailing... and nailing... and so much nailing! In the end, just like your beautiful hutch, the project turned out so well. Now I've got many more projects either on the go or planned! I'm hooked!
Thanks for sharing your amazing DIY!
Take care,

You undertook that huge piece for your first foray into painting furniture...you were very brave, it turned out fabulous!
Wow, I am Wayyyy impressed if that was your first. Hmmm, it is a good thing there is no photographic evidence of my first. It was a horrible Yellow, yes Yellow stained Modern Buffet that....get this, Turned into a big dining table! The table pulled out of it. It was free and pretty cool, but when we moved, I was totally glad to see it stay behind.
Ah, my first project was my bedside tables, these sparked my love of refinishing furniture.
Feel free to take a look.

That was a major undertaking for your first time, but you rocked it. OMG, I've been doing this for so long, I can barely remember my first paint job. I think it was just a little white table.
Goodness - that is GORGEOUS!!! My first project... I don't even remember!!! (that makes me feel old...)
;-D robelyn
Wow, that is your first project?? It is perfectly imperfect. I love it. I just started refinishing also and understand your frustrations. But we learn from our mistakes. Ha!
Wow this is fun! I painted my first project when I was 17. a way back in the 70's..I purchased a coffee table at a church bazaar for 3.00 and bought it home and used something called an antiqueing kit to give it a somewhat antique, distressed appearance. Later I just did it on my own with plain old paint. That table is still in the family. Painted a new distressed way. My daughter has it now.
I just finished my first furniture re-do! You can see the pictures http://commonplacebeauty.blogspot.com/2011/10/vintage-cabinet-reveal.html
It was so much fun to do with the annie sloan chalk paint. I've never antiqued/distressed furniture before but I've done other craft stuff with latex paint and it just does not distress as well as ASCP!
I love this piece. Found you over at Eisy.
That was your FIRST?! Seriously, I think my first was a little coffee table that I bought for $3, painted with flat black paint and sold for $10. It was seriously HORRIBLE!!!! haha. I'm embarrassed thinking about. But I've done probably a 100 since then! Thanks for sharing this over at Trash 2 Treasure on Kammy's Korner!!
I'm love in..Gorgeous!
Monica.
I'm the one who actually purchased that! LOL Weird that I stumbled upon this post. I love it...it holds all of my essential oils and looks stunning in my work room. Everyone thinks that I am a mad scientist because it is loaded with glass bottles. Thanks for letting me purchase your first...I love it!!
